Beginner's Course

The minimum age is 12 years. Our equipment and course format are not suited for small children. This is basically the same for all archery ranges and clubs around Australia.

We operate outdoors, and as such are subject to the weather!

If there are passing showers or just a sprinkle of rain, we will usually still operate. There is some spoken content in the course which can be presented in a weatherproof space. However if the rain is steady or storms are forecast we will cancel.
In these instances, we will monitor the weather closely, and make a final decision at least 1 hour prior to the start time of any class. If a class is cancelled, we will notify you by email if there is enough notice, or post it on our home page.

For unforeseen cancellations, we will do our best to offer a make-up class, or otherwise credit you towards future lessons.

Beginners Course fee is $150.00 per head for one person, $135 in a group of two or more.

Close fitting clothing. Shoes, NOT sandals. Sun protection. Drinking water. Snacks.

We provide everything a complete novice needs to be able to use a bow and arrows: technique, equipment, safety, competition. To focus on effective tuition, we have one instructor for every three or four beginners.

Currently the payment method is EFT into the club’s account. Payment must be made early to ensure enrolment in your corse date of choice.

First, make contact with the club’s Coaching Coordinator to make sure that there is space in the course you would like to enrol in. You could look at an application form online here, which collects enrolment information.

We can make arrangements for catchup sessions as required.

No. The course provides all the equipment a beginner needs to participate

However, do Not buy equipment without first researching exactly what you need. Go shopping by all means, but don’t purchase anything until you have discussed this in depth with club coaches and advisors.

Our Club

Unfortunately, archery at our club doesn’t work like this.

I know, I know… wouldn’t it be great if archery was set up like a golf driving range where you could come and sling arrows to your hearts content for a few dollars?

Due to the safety protocols and the shortage of qualified instructors, we don’t have the capacity to run ‘come-n-try’ or casual archery sessions.

We have ramp access between the clubhouse at street level and the field slightly lower.

We have tools to suit all archery requirements: equipment setup and repair, fabrication and adjustment. Many members are experienced in equipment tuning and maintenance and are always prepared and happy to assist novices.
There are BBQ facilities, toilets, a clubroom and storage space.

Yes, we have equipment available for Beginners Course graduates who have a few more weeks to decide whether they wish to go further in the sport. There fee is $10 per session.

About Archery

Target faces have 5 coloured concentric circles with each one having an inner and outer scoring zone. A shot in the innermost circle scores the highest value (10 points), whilst a shot in the outermost circle scores the lowest value (1 point).

Target divisions include the compound bow and the recurve bow. The maximum distance shot for the men’s open division is 90 metres and for the women’s open division is 70 metres. For youth under the age of 13 the maximum distance is 40 metres.

Events at the Olympic Games are in the outdoor target discipline and use the recurve (Olympic) bow. The compound bow is very popular. On average they are faster, more accurate and easier to shoot than a recurve bow.

Competition has reached new heights with this equipment.

A single string bow that is used exclusively in the Olympics. In the Freestyle Recurve configuration your 1st year cost can be between $500 to $900 which will keep you going for many years in the social and recreational environment. The price includes the cost of sights, stabilisers and arrows.

When you decide to set your sights on open competition then you would trade-in your existing equipment for some of the high performance equipment and that can cost you up to $3,000. The price includes the cost of sights, stabilisers and arrows required to shoot in this division.

In the Barebow Recurve configuration the cost is around 30% less as sights and stabilisers are not allowed. Barebow Recurve is one of the biggest divisions in America and Europe and is one of the hotly contested divisions in the World Field Championships.

For a usable setup you could expect to pay between $500 to $900 which will keep you going for many years in the social and recreational environment. The price includes the cost of sights, stabilisers and arrows. If in the following years you may wish to get into open competition then you would trade-in your existing equipment for the top of the line bow, arrows and accessories where you could expect to pay up to $3,000. In the Barebow Compound division you would expect to pay around 30% less. This price is lower as sights and stabilisers are not allowed.

In Sydney there are a number of retailers of archery equipment, and once you have a clear idea of your equipment needs you should visit the shops  and ask questions about their stock availablility.

BUT: do not purchase anything until you have confirmed with our club coaches that your choices will meet your actual needs.

Start with the club. Coaches and members are always happy to offer advice and assistance with equipment.

Check online resources as well, to bring to any discussion.
